Browsing photos in the Finder!

A great tip submitted by Csaba Illes: Browsing photos in the Finder! If you have a huge library of photos, iPhoto can get slow and not be as responsive. Sometimes, you also want to have certain pictures in folders without having to import them into iPhoto. It can be done, but the folder might not be as aesthetic as on Windows where you have all the thumbnails. This problem can easily be solved by modifying the view options of certain folders. In the pictures folder, press "Command-J" to open the view options, choose "This window only" (if you don' t want this all around the Finder) and check "Show icon preview". This unfortunately only works in the pictures folder that comes with your OS. You can also change the size of the icons to get bigger thumbnails. Thanks Csaba for the tip!

Well, I use this option on my desktop and other folders and works perfectly, I'm not sure it works only on folders from OS. In fact it works everywhere, I just tried ehehehe.

That's cool! I don't know why the option was only showing up in the original pictures folder for me. I'll try again.

Yay! I can cross one more of those pesky "things I knew how to do on my old PC but hadn't figured out on the Mac" list. Cheers

You can also navigate to the folder with all your photos, select all (hit the apple key + A), then right click your mouse (or hold the control key and click your left mouse button)...when the pop up menu appears next to your mouse cursor, choose "slide show" in the list of options.

Cool, Allen. By the way, I found a great app for reading manga (japanese comics) on the screen. It is called Simple Comic I found it on Version Tracker, it is a freeware. You can use is to see your pics too, it has some nice full-screen options.

Command-J on the "Pictures" folder (with the little TV set icon) and on every other file or folder I have tried gives me a menu with only 3 choices: Text size, Show icons and Show preview column. There is no "This window only", or "Show icon preview"

Right click, "Slide Show" on a .jpeg gives me a good full screen of that image but no slide show - I have to close, select the next .jpeg and right click again for the next image.

Nobody loves me.

Wrong. Command-A does work as a slide show.

My first mistake this year!

But Command-J still spurns me.

George,

To do this, you need to have the view of the window set to icons. You either have it set to list/columns. To change this, go to the folder and click on the "Icons" icon in the top part of the window. Then, close the window to have that folder have "memory". Read more here.

Also, I would suggest have a different background color for your pictures folder. Read about that here.

Hello:

While on the subject of pictures, I've always been bothered by the amount of pictures in my iPhoto Library. I have sorted them into albums and folders, yet they all remain in the Library. Is there a way of having them only in the Albums and not in the Library? Anyone???

Thanks

That is why I was only getting that cool option with the pictures folder. It had nothing to do with the folders built-in the OS. All my folders were set to list view except my pictures folder! Thanks MacTipper!

Awesome! I have been trying to figure that out forever. It makes it so much easier when you are trying to send a picture as an attachment or insert it into a document. You can see a small thumbnail instead of random, meaningless letters.
