Non-breaking space in Pages or Microsoft Word!

A great tip submitted by Dominic P. Tremblay: Non-breaking space in Pages or Microsoft Word! A non-breaking space is very useful when typing a document and the automatic formatting chooses to cut the sentence at an undesired place. For example, cutting a sentence with an "Enter" right between "Mr." and "Steve Jobs" looks weird:

This issue can be solved with a non-breaking space. In either Pages or Microsoft Word, you simply have to press "Option-Space". The result looks like this:

Thanks Dominic for the great tip!

I used to use Shift-Enter, which pushes the cursor down one line (which is different to a carriage return/line break).

to bryan; remeber the basic premise of the option metakey is that 'if you can something, the option key can make it better.' Everything's better with option-key on it!

re hcd; the big difference is that shift-enter inserts a permanent line break even after editing of preceding text where the non-breaking space (non-breaking hyphens also available) only manifests at the end of a line.

Just about every application known to man treats the 'option-space' this way.

Also, a 'shift-return' is called a soft return. It forces a 'carriage return' (CR) but NOT an 'end of paragraph' (EOP).

All of these keystrokes can help format text to your liking.

This may be a dumb question but I've only had my mac for a couple weeks. How do I hide the page breaks in Microsoft Word? Is this possible? Thanks.

To tag on to er3l, if you haven't already found it, this page creativebits.org/keyboard_shortcuts_in_os_x has a list of keystroke shortcuts and don't overlook the symbol widget available from tacowidgets.com

Yesterday my sister came up to me and told about her problem. As he told me her doc files were damaged. I advised her the next tool - repair docx document. But today I have been surprised, because of she called me up and thanked me a lot for this tool. As she told me the utility helped her very easy and without money. I have been using this tool for couple months.

Yikes, I bound option-space to Quicksilver. Maybe because of that Word now uses "Control-Shift-Space" (without me having set it).

In any case, one can also insert this using the Menu "Insert" > "Symbol..." then click on the tab "Special Characters". There are all kinds of characters there as well as their associated short cuts.
