Publishing your calendars without .Mac!

I have to admit that being able to share calendars between Macs was really one of the features that convinced me to get .Mac. .Mac is great, but it is pricey for what it offers especially if you are not interested in every features included in the package. There is a pretty cool website that offers the service of web published and shared calendars free. It is called iCal Exchange. To publish and share your calendars from iCal:

1. Go to http://www.icalx.com/
2. Choose "Create an account" in the right sidebar.
3. Follow the instructions to open a free account.
4. Once your account is created, you can login to get the URL to publish to. The URL should be http://icalx.com/private/accountname/ for private calendars or http://icalx.com/public/accountname/ for public calendars.
5. Now you are ready to go to iCal.
6. In iCal, select the calendar you want to publish at the left.
7. Go to "Calendar" and choose "Publish".
8. For "Publish on", choose "a Private Server".
9. Paste the URL in the "Base URL" field.
10. Enter you login and password for iCal Exchange.
11. Check "Publish changes automatically".
12. Click on "Publish".
13. It will display "Calendar Published".

You calendar is now on the Web. To get it on another Mac:

1. Copy the URL iCal gave you when it displayed "Calendar Published".
2. In iCal (on your other Mac), go to "Calendar" and choose "Subscribe".
3. Paste the URL of your published calendar.

You are done! You now have a .Mac like way of sharing your calendars between Macs and accessing them on the Web!

This is wonderful but it only published the group that was currently selected. Can I do it for all groups?

I've been using icalx for about two years now. Our whole family publish our calendars onto it, so we know who's doing what.
windows and linix users can use Sunbird (from Mozilla) as a standalone webcal client - works perfectly with icalx.
failing that, icax lets other users view you public calendars as a web page.

Well it's nice we can use iWeb without .Mac. I would think Apple would figure it out that they are charging to much, but maybe they are happy with their customer base that they have. I think it might be worth it if a person takes full advantage of .Mac per year. The problem is iWeb seems kind of limited. Can widgets be loaded in to iWeb?
Regarding iCal could that work being uploaded into blogger ?

Hi,

Thanks for the great tips. I wonder if PC users can also access this to make things more streamlined for calendars and addresses?

Great thread.

1. PC users can probably see the calendars online as well. I don't know if there is a PC application that could subscribe to the calendar the way iCal does it.

2. It only does one calendar at the time. You have to do each calendar one by one.

3. I'll take a look to see if there is something similar for Address Book. Maybe for a future tip!

On a local network, address-o-sync uses Rendezvous to sync address books (or just specific groups). It's made my life a lot easier:

In case you're having problems with that site, try this alternative, also does public and private calendar publishing straight from ical.
