New Mail Notification in the Menu Bar!

This is a pretty cool add-on that will add Mail's main features in your menu bar. It is called ManilaMail. You can also very quickly see when there is new mail (very useful if your dock is hidden and you cannot see the Mail icon). It also gives you a quick access to retrieve new mail, to go to your inbox or to compose a new email. The app is great because of how simple it is. It doesn't add any icon in the Dock and if you don't want to have to worry about it, you can select "Open ManilaMail on login" in the Preferences. You can download ManilaMail here on MacUpdate.

Hey, I was wondering if you knew how to make Mail sync with University e-mail ive been trying forever to get it to work. Any light you can shed on this would be great.

MacGreek,
I realize that this is not quite the apropriate place to ask such a question, but I've always wanted to set up a "Mail" account, but have never known how to fully operate the Mail Wizard. I do not have a .MAC account and do not know what POP IMAP and Exchange are... other than account types. Can you give me a brief and quick overview on how to link a Mail account to a gmail account or set-up a completely new email adress (the second option perferably)? This is one of a few mac apps that I have failed to utilize with my purchase of a Macbook last fall.
Thanks,
Robert

Robert:

You have to get the POP and SMTP address from your service provider (most free service provider (such as hotmail) don't support it). GMail is one of the few that supports it. GMail has a very good guide specifically for Apple Mail:

Let me know if you have any other questions,

It is impossible with the free Hotmail. That is another thing why GMail is so much better.

I understand that you are asking about the mail service in Mac, but I found Office for Mac online at a student discount and it can be configured for different accounts such as Earthlink and Netscape Webmail. I have not tried to sync with the native e-mail service as yet. I will try it and see if I can get my Netscape account set-up.

I do receive notification of my Earthlink e-mails when I log on and that is through the Mac program, so Earthlink can be set up.
