Working with tabs in Safari, Firefox and Camino!

Tabbed browsing is really one of the greatest improvement in web browsing in the past years. Not having the headache of managing thirty different Safari windows is great (tabbed browsing would probably be okay with three windows, each with ten tabs). One of the thing that annoyed me most with browsing in Camino is the way Camino handles tabs. I found a fix to what bothered me and discovered that the same is true with Safari and Firefox, but reversed. It is pretty well known that holding down "Command" when clicking on a link will open the link in a new window or a new tab (if tabbed browsing in enabled). The feature is great except that Camino will open the page in a new tab and switch you automatically to this tab. I often end up in a website where I want to open three different links without opening them one by one and having to click back on the original tab to open the other links. In Camino, you can then hold down "Shift-Command" and click on the link to get the same behavior than Safari or Firefox (opens in a new tab, but you remain in your active tab). In Safari and Firefox however, you can also hold down "Shift-Command" when clicking a link to do the same than the default Camino behavior, open in a tab and switch to that tab.

Yeah. Shift-command and [ or ] to switch tabs.

Thanks for the tip. I was getting annoyed with Camino for just that reason.

If you get sick of having to hold down shift + option, you can just change the default by going to preferences and unchecking the "When I open a link in a new tab, switch to it" box. The TabMix Plus add-on is also helpful for managing tabbed browsing.

Several times i have seen this same question posted and i didn't really know how to do it myself. The apple help isn't real clear. in safari, on os x 10.4 i found you can switch with the: command + shift and then use the left or right arrows. works quickly for me. hope this helps.

obviously, this is not the place for my concern... but... a place for it would be a forum. Macgeek, do you run anything like that? I often have questions to ask, but can not find a tip relating to them. I choose to ask questions here becuase the user feedback is very fast and helpful.

My question to which I had originally decided to post was... Is there anyway to deauthorize all of the computers you have authorized (but your own) in iTunes from your computer (skipping the hassle of going to the computers you authorized and deauthorizing from there)?

If you are using a mouse with a scroll wheel that also clicks as if it were a center button, you can click a link with the scroll wheel and it will open the link in a new tab and keep you in your current tab

tom,
if you use safari, it likes to automatically selects any text box on the current webpage, so pressing command-shift-arrow just changes where you are typing, and wont change tabs. this is why using using command-shift- [ or ] bypasses this situation.
hope this clarifies using the [ or ] instead or the arrows.

Robert - (on iTunes)

you can deauthorize ALL the computers from your account once a year by clicking Store > View Account information... and then on that page look for "computer authorizations" and click "Deauthorize All" to the right of that.

You would want to go to those computers and deauthorize them all manually though, because you can only use the above trick once a year. This is just one more sercuity catch that has been set up to prevent piracy, but the trick comes in handy in case the computer you had authorized had it's OS reinstalled, or you can't find/get to it anymore...that's why the option is there...and why you should only need it once a year.

Sorry to make you run to all those friends houses and try to deatuhorize ur account, but hope this helps regaurdless ;)

Thanks for the tip for tabs, but with mac I use more a different approach to internet browsing.

To me one of the most useful features in mac os X is the all powerful F10-key. When browsing in the net with many useful sites, you can quickly see the relevant information. (When I was doing my Master's Thesis I used this a lot.) Then when you push f10 you can easily _see_ the relevant information in the window and go back simply pushing F10 again.

Nevertheless, tabbing the same site is very good option. (For example all the wiki-pages in one window) That keeps things organized.
+ Desktop manager is good for reserving one desktop only for browsing.

david

i stand corrected on safari tabs. my ibook does move from tab to tab using the arrow keys. my powerbook does not. also i just found the ibook does not always work with arrows keys. thanks for setting me right

erik

sorry for the incorrect information i posted on changing tabs. in fact david is 100% correct that using either the left or right parentheses key,+apple key + shift key is the way to change from tab to tab

I love tabs but the one thing that drives me mad is if I click the red close window button by mistake when I mean to minimise the window, I would like a warning to ask me if I'm sure, I'd heard about a programme called Taboo, which does this but it doesn't seem to be available anymore, does anyone know a way round this?
