A 2D or 3D dock!

A lot of people complained about the look of the new 3D Dock, but even more so, of the lack of choice for the look of the Dock. The side dock was supposed to be 3D as well, and it only changed in the Gold Master. What is great is that every time people are unhappy about the look of the OS, a third-party application solves everything and this time is no exception. It is called CustomDock. It is a very simple application that lets you switch from a 3D dock to a 2D dock and vice versa. From what I understand, it should also let you get a side 3D dock (I am not sure, I haven't tried it, I really like the new Dock!). You can get more information and download CustomDock here on MacUpdate.com

I really hated the new dock. It slowed down my computer (iBook G4) and was hard to see. I quickly found the application and used it! :D The other thing I didn't like was the fact that you can only use the number keys for spaces. I found a solution for that too! Read how to do that here.

I was really hoping that it would work for the side dock, (I want a 3d side dock) but sadly it does not.

I heard that the "Blue Screen" problem which occurred during the installation of Leopard occurred because of a third party application - Application Enhancer. If I'm not wrong, another application was tied to it somehow - Clear Dock.

This allowed me to modify the way my dock looked in Tiger. I changed the colour of the arrows of active applications, I got rid of the dock's background.

However, while installing Leopard, I encountered the Blue Screen. It was horrendous. Most friends who got the Blue Screen also had Application Enhancer (Clear Dock) installed, and so I'm not sure if that'll be an issue.

With this third party application, I'm worried that there might be conflicting issues with future releases of Mac OSX.

Views, anyone?

I don't like how the arrows showing which applications are in use are gone. For someone like me with 6 apps out at a time, it becomes very inefficient...

Another option for those wrestling with the Dock is to try out some of the "Smoked Glass" hacks that were all over in the days immediately following Leopard's release. The transparency of the original glass surface made the active application "blue dots" near impossible to see on my Macbook. Replacing a few images in the /Contents/Resorces directory of the Dock package resulted in a much sleeker, sexier, and functional Dock. Google +"smoked glass" +dock to see what I'm talking about.

I really don't understand those who hate the new dock. It's 3D and it's mirrored, it's very beautiful ;)

@brain

come on. we had thousands of tiger tips. now it's time to experience leopard :-)

re the dock (and other complaints): so many people are complaining their whole life about everything. leopard is fantastic - in every regard. should apple create new cool products or always taking care of the old school gents?

if you argue you cannot buy always the new stuff simply because you cannot afford it - just borrow some money and buy apple stocks. in the last years APPLE paid for all my apple gadgets (and I bought most of the new stuff).

take care guys and big applause for the best mac tip site on earth.

Amen Steffen... I know not everyone is as financially blessed as some but Apple asks for pittance for these OS upgrades and its amazingly worth the upgrade. Go get a copy of Leopard if you can and you use your Mac for at least half an hour a day.

As for the dock, I also think people are crazy who specifically don't like it. Jeez, how hard is it to please you people? :P On the other hand, I'm all for customisation and personalisation so great for whatever tickles you.

If your computer slowed down after installing Leopard, try running Disk Utility and then repair your hard drive's permissions. Worked for me with both Leopard and Tiger before it.

There is another way to change from the 3d and 2d dock with out downloading anything.
Just type the following into the terminal:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

ENTER

type: killall Dock

ENTER

To change it back just type:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean NO

ENTER

type: killall Dock

ENTER

Since changing to a 2D dock, everything is running a lot smoother. Didn't realise how hungry it was. Cover flow in iTunes is smooth again. So is the genie effect. Nice work!
