Opening a file in a specific app from a Stack!

One of the things that bothers me about the way Stacks are handled in 10.5 is that you cannot right-click on a file to choose in which application to open it. To do this, you first have to click "Show in Finder" in the Stack and then right-click on the file. There is a faster way of doing it if the application that you want to open it with is in the Dock however. Here is how:

1. Click on the stack to open it.
2. Click and hold on the file.
3. Drag the file from the stack to the icon of the application on the Dock.
4. If the application becomes highlighted, it will open it without a hitch. If it doesn't, it means that the application is not a recommended application for this type of file. It is possible to force it to open the file by pressing "Option - Command".

By the way, Apple released many updates today. Updates are available for OS X 10.4 Tiger, iPhoto '08 and Final Cut Studio 2.

Great tip, I would also like to add – if you already have an bunch of applications open you can click and drag an item from your stack and press the 'command tab' shortcut to bring up your open apps and just drag the file onto the icon of the app you would like to open the file with. (be sure to press command tab AFTER you begin dragging the file). This also works from the finder and desktop.

You can also do the same if a file is in the background. If you have one of your corners set to "All Windows" you can do it with just your mouse. Just click the file and drag it to the appropriate corner (or hit F9). Find the open application and hover your mouse over for a second. That application will then open and you can let go.

What about using quick look for a file in a stack? I was trying to do that the other day and I couldn't figure it out. Am I missing something, or is that not easily possible.

Marc, one way to quick look a file in a stack is to first quick look any file from the finder. Once quick look is active you can quick look other files by a single click on its icon, which may be an icon in a stack as well.
