A recent items stack hidden in the OS!
A great tip submitted by Rohit Deshpande (who got it from macosxhints.com): A recent items stack hidden in the OS! Wow, when I received it, I was really impressed. It is unfortunately Leopard only. It is a stack for Recent Applications, Recent Documents, Recent Servers, Favorite Volumes and Favorite Items. It works great and it is truly well integrated because it is built-in the OS, just not enabled. I assume the reason Apple didn't enable it is because they didn't think it was stable enough. It seems to be working just fine though. Here is how to get it:
1. Open Terminal. (/Applications/Utilities/Terminal)
2. Paste this following line in Terminal (it is one long line):
defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-others -array-add '{ "tile-data" = { "list-type" = 1; }; "tile-type" = "recents-tile"; }'
3. Restart the Dock by entering (the capital D is required):
killall Dock
4. Here is a video screenshot from Rohit showing how it works:
5. You can get more of these stacks by doing the same procedure again. To remove it, simply drag it off the Dock.

If Apple didn't enable it, or tell us about it, wither it's not ready yet, or they don't want us to have it. Either way, iDon't see the point of messing with something you have little idea about. When the time comes, iDon't see why apple wouldn't want to add more features to Leopard.
You could do the same thing simply by creating a Smart Folder in the Finder (or in any folder) and place that folder in the Dock.

I think Apple didn't said nothing about this tip because they realized that you can have this kind of stack without using any Terminal code, just using Smart Folders (by choosing "search" for recent apps, recent documents, etc etc).
Excellent tip. I don't agree that dropping a Smart Folder into the Dock produces the same effect. Unless someone knows something that I don't, Smart folders don't operate as stacks. Clicking on one in the Dock simply opens the folder in the Finder.
I may be missing something obvious...but is there a way to make this stack open with the "fan" option?? I like that better but can't seem to figure out how to change it....it is only on this particular stack...all the others work fine....suggestions?
Matt or goon, what ever. Right click on the folder, (if ur using a laptop, thats, control click). Then something will pop up, and you should see a line that says, VIEW AS, click on that and then u get the option how to view ur folders. Hope this Helps :)

You know when you minimize a video to the dock, and it still plays, is there a way to allow that on leopard?
Zevie, try right-clicking on this new stack, or watch the video, there's no view option... I'm guessing you can change it using the terminal? I'm new to macs so have no clue, but agree with both Matt /and/ Goon that a fan would look much better. Can anyone help?

aww... My friend had trouble with the same thing. If you have the dock on the left or right of your screen it, for no known reason, excludes the view as option. It makes no sense in any way shape or form. Just move your dock to the bottom and then right click the stack...
Ok, so when you're in the terminal how do you get to utilities?

Great tip!! I am still not able to open as a fan though. Has anyone figured out how to do that?
The stack Style pretty... But this feature has been in Mac OS X ever since... Just klick on the upper left "Apple"... Recent Objects
