Saving as .doc by default instead of .docx!
One thing that I found really annoying with the new Word 2008 is that it always wanted to save the files as .docx by default. The problem is that .docx files are not compatible with previous versions of Word and not everyone upgraded to the latest version. With .doc, you are pretty much certain that nearly everyone will be able to read it. It is possible to change the default behavior in Word's preferences. It is located in the preferences, under "Save". From there, you can select "Word 97-2004 Document (doc)" under "Save Word files as".

I'm glad I ran across this, I've been trying to decide if I want to buy the new Office 2008. Is it worth it? I need some user feedback before I actually get it..ya know? Any input would be appreciated.

After using microsoft office so many years, I can't tell you how much I prefer using iwork. It is so much simpler than what I found ms word to be, regardless why have a mac and use microsoft-heh?
I completely agree with Yahara. I've been in technology for 40+ years and used Microsoft products (MS-DOS, Windows, Word, Office) from their 1.0 incarnations until last June. That's when I moved to the Mac. I couldn't possibly go back. It's painful to use Windows and particularly the Office products, including Word. iWorks '08 is a vastly superior product suite. I still have Parallels with Window XP and Office in my Mac, just in case, but look forward to the day when I can delete them forever. Don't waste your money!
I use both iWork and Office '08 and enjoy them both for different reasons. I prefer Word to Pages simply because I'm used to it and I do feel that Word '08 is better than Word '04. The same goes for Excel. Keynote, however, is vastly superior than Powerpoint.
Whenever I download an office document in safari, the extension is changed, for example from .doc to .dot. How can I fix this?

I was disappointed in my transition from Mac Office 2004 to 2008. I was hoping for an increase in 'snappiness' and speed since it was written for native Intel finally, but it seems just as sluggish compared to my old XP running Office 2003......pretty disappointing. Even little things are irritating: for example you can't do a Mac equivalent of "Control-R or D" to duplicate row/columns to the right or down. Also, if you do a "Find" function from the Edit menu, that menu STAYS on the screen and doesn't let you go back to the spreadsheet until you click it away, rather than just co-existing. This might seem minor, but when there are ALOT of things like this, it's just a time drag on getting things done.

thanks for the tip! and i too prefer iwork for its speediness and simplicity, htough i still find myself using ms office. and i agree 2008 seems like a disappointment from 2004.
