Volume adjustments without the sound!

A great tip posted in the comments by Louietwoie: Volume adjustments without the sound! I didn't know about this until it was posted in the comments and I think it is pretty cool. It is really useful in presentations. The shortcut that lets you do this is simply "Shift" with the volume adjustments keys.

Also, a note about past tips. A lot of comments were about the fact that it is with the "Alt" key instead of the "Option" key. On the Mac, the "Alt" key and the "Option" key are actually the same.

Also, you can turn the sound for volume adjustments completely off in the sound preferences, and then press Shift when you want the sound feedback. The checkbox is under the Sound Effects tab in the Sound Preferences.

I am trying to figure out how to include this website as an RSS feed in Mail. Could you post a brief tutorial on how to do that? I love your blog, but I use Mail way more than I use dashboard, and that would be way more efficient.

i don't know if you've noticed this before, or posted a tip about it, but in itunes the "add playlist" button at the bottom left turns to "add smart playlist" when you hold down the option key. i discovered this by accident recently ;)

@ Merlin

It's funny, because I just recently figured out how to do that. I'm assuming you are using Leopard. You first have to click the plus in the lower left corner of Mail, then select "Add RSS Feeds..." A dialogue box will come up, and all you have to do is cut and paste the URL of this blog. For example, you could enter "http://tips4mac.blogspot.com/2008/04/volume-adjustments-without-sound.html" and it would work.

Cool, but can anyone tell me how to mute other sounds when you're in full screen mode--for DVD player or FrontRow? It never fails that I'll be showing a movie to my class on my Mac (onto a projector) and my email keeps chiming through incessantly.

Terris wants to eliminate the sounds of mail coming in while using powerpoint.

Just go to sounds preferences and turn off the alert sounds. Then turn them back on when finished with the presentation.
