Renaming files in OS X!

One thing that I hate about OS X is when I try to rename a file in list view and it won't even let me write the name of the file. It just doesn't stay in rename mode. That happens often in a folder that contains many videos. What happens is that the icon preview is being generated. You can see it as the icon on the left of the name of the file is blank. Each time an icon appears, it switches back out of renaming mode. The only way I have found to rename a file when that happens is to wait for all icons to appear. I really hope Apple will fix this, but in the meantime, it is the only way I have found to rename the files.

That's not actually a tip but I agree it is annoying.

You could always use "Get Info" and change it there.

If you want to rename a file quickly, why don't you just select the file you want to rename and hit the ENTER button? That's what I do and I never had problem.

I do the same... Just ENTER and no problem.

I use Icon mode, but tried on List mode and worked too.

Yea... I'm sure Apple will get to it... but it's really not a problem if you get into the habit of hitting enter when you want to rename a file.

Get Info is probably the best way to do it, though. Even if finder gets closed it doesn't matter... Once you're in 'Get Info' nothing can stop you! Nothing!!!

Major Leopard Update -- 10.5.5

Perhaps this update has solved your file renaming issue.

The only annoying thing about "Get Info" is when you start typing to rename it the file extension (.jpg, etc) gets overwritten. I hate that! I agree that pressing Enter is the way to go, then you don't have to worry about the extension.

@ trailguy

When you rename the file and it loses the file extension in the name, that isn't a problem. You can always turn of "Show all file extensions" in Finder preferences.

Usually i have to rename alot of file names of the same name but with different numbers. I wanted to know if there is a way to rename multiple files by selecting them all and changing one name with a number at the end and it changes all of them with ascending numbering similar to windows....

I use A Better Finder Rename. There are free softwares, but ABFR allows you to change metadata too, not just the name. It's super easy to batch name folders, append numbers, etc. There are LOADS of options. http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11366

Uncheck «Show icon preview» in «Show View Options» will solve this issue. Especially when you are in a folder with many video. Who really need to view first blank frame of a movie ?

Only very recently I've had a similar problem where suddenly I can't rename a file (and the get info didn't work either). I forced quit the finder (relaunch) and all was well again.

Looking for the easy way to batch Rename Files and folders by the thousands? RenameMaestro is probably the easiest batch file renamer you'll find to instantly rename multiple files:

This swift and simple to use File Renamer lets you add increasing or decreasing numbers, letters and dates. You can swiftly add and remove text, include the created date in the file name, press rename and watch it rename files in a split second.
