Save desktop space!

My desktop always ends up with hundreds of icons, to the point where I run out of desktop space (on a 23" ACD). I had already switched to smaller 32x32 icons, but I have now found a solution that takes even less space. I switched the Label position to "Right" instead of "Bottom". It really makes a huge difference and even more text is displayed. You can change the Label position in the "View Options" (Command - J).

You can also uncheck the "snap to grid" option and let icons overlap. This allows you to have tight clusters of common objects instead of being all spread out. The icons can share a certain amount of desktop space. I find this works quite well for files and alias's.

Does it really help that much since each item is shorter but it is also wider?

A solution I find most helpful is to create files for those excess desktop items... the files are titled 'Desktop' each with the month and year. (ex. Desktop Oct. 2008) That way you always have access to the items chronologically. I also make a map of categories according to topic (ex: 'internet sites', 'Things to finish', 'items to file' et. that I want easily accessible on my desk top and my desktop remains uncluttered.

What I like to do is basically make a folder named desktop, and put all of my icons in that one folder, so I have one icon, with everything I need. Although I now have a folder called "Stuff" under users in Finder. In the folder I have other folders with categories, like web development, images, doc's, everything I would have on my desktop, in a quick folder. It's not the best solution, but it keeps my desktop clean.

Thank you Admin, actually you have written the same information that I have. However, your version is more clearly stated. G
